What is papermaché?
Papier-mâché is one of the oldest sculptural traditions in the world — and one of the most misunderstood.
In Mathilde's hands, it is a rigorous and layered process. Each sculpture begins with an internal armature built from paper balls, cardboard and chicken wire, shaped to capture the posture and proportions of the animal.
Masking tape binds and smooths the structure before a coating of papier-mâché clay is applied to build surface detail, texture and lifelike precision. Finally, papier-mâché strips are used to refine surfaces and sculpt the finest details — ears, fur, bandanas, symbolic accessories.
The result is sculptures of striking realism, every element rendered with patience and sensitivity.
